I really, really enjoyed this. I'm a very visual person so I don't generally get on well with audio-only productions, but this was great!

Okay, so I'm late to the party. Like, eleven years late. I don't do audio plays, as a rule, but I've finally been working my way through a few of them over the last couple of years, starting with the ones focussing more on Jack, because he's what I've always been interested in. But I've started getting more interested in TW in general recently so I've been slogging my way through the Torchwood Collected Radio Dramas (and it has been a slog, tbh, because most of them have been extremely mediocre!) and finally made it to The House of the Dead.

Cut for spoilers, just in case I'm not the last person in the world to listen to this )

Oh wow. I got this for Christmas and finally had a chance to listen to it today whilst doing my ironing (definitely livened up the ironing!) and, well, obviously it was going to be tremendous fun, with Jack Harkness and John Hart finally getting to play off each other again, but wow, it really was fun!

Great fun. Highly recommend. :-)

OMG. I just finished listening to this and I had to post straight away because it is AWESOME! As I've said before, I am really not into audio only because I find it hard to maintain concentration and I just really, really miss the visuals of the actors' faces etc., but wow. I was excited going into this one because it was about Jack at the Time Agency, but it not only exceeded my expectations, it really blew me away!

For Christmas I got the Big Finish "The Lives of Captain Jack" CDs. I am not at all into audio plays because I am a very visual person and find it hard to manage without the visuals, especially faces, and without the descriptions of thought processes you get in written media, but I'd already tried out "Broken" and "The Conspiracy" last year and when this boxset came out I knew I had to have it. I mean, the chance to get even a tiny glimpse into some of Jack's past that's been glossed over on the TV? Who wouldn't want that?

(I'd also really, really love some new *future* canon, even if it isn't really considered canon, but just *something* to give me *some* ideas for role-playing purposes of what Jack might be up to post-Miracle Day. Maybe that'll come next? *crosses fingers*)

Anyway, I just listened to "The Year After I Died" and it was pretty good. A rather big section in the middle with no Jack (I mean, he's who we're all here for, isn't he!) but otherwise pretty entertaining and it felt like it fitted well into the DW universe. Not as many new insights into Jack as I'd hoped for, but there were some nice little snippets.

Cut for story spoilers (though more about Jack than the story) )

I think it really says something about how utterly crap this finale was that, upon rewatching, the thing that got me going the most was Jack saying, "I was in China for the Boxer Rebellion." My brain spent the next several minutes thinking about how one could hook him up with Spike, or Angel, or Drusilla, or Darla, or the Chinese Slayer, and how one could work that into a story as a flashback with him meeting one of them again in the present day etc. etc. - because it was far more interesting than the utterly ridiculous, overblown ending to what had started out as a fascinating idea.

Okay, Rhys and Andy in the Category One ward saying goodbye to Gwen's dad and the unnamed girl was moving too, but honestly, that was it.

And god the Blessing really did look gross.

Ah well. At least it didn't have a really, really stupid and groan-worthy ending.

Oh wait. It did.

I'm going to stick with TW S1 and 2 from now on, with the odd foray into CoE. I've just finished a rewatch of S1 and it was about a billion times better than this drivel!

I was looking forward to getting to In the Dark in my Angel S1 rewatch and it was just as much fun as I remembered. But the moment it started, I couldn't help thinking of the similiarites with KKBB. Mainly because they both start with James Marsters up on a roof giving us a nice little introduction to his character. And of course because he's basically playing the same part in both of them. Old shag (I would say love but that's not really true in either case) of the leading man - the dark, mysterious, older-than-he-looks leading man - with whom he has a love/hate relationship. Meeting the team and chatting up the girls (Cordy/Tosh/Gwen) and the girls falling for it, even if only briefly. And there's torture in ITD while in KKBB Jack's just got back from the year on the Valiant. Both episodes even end with another rooftop scene and a sunset! (Or is it sunrise in KKBB? I can't remember. Same coloured sky, anyway!)

I know it's nothing deep, but it amused me, and I can't help wondering how much of the mirroring in KKBB was deliberate!

Nope, sorry, you've lost me with this one.

Ah well, at least next week's looks more interesting, even if I'm not convinced by Gwen turning on Jack one tiny bit. *g*

1. Jack/Giles fic is off for betaing. I cannot describe how chuffed I am at finally having written something long enough to get beta'd again! I expect it'll still need a lot of work, but I'm up for the challenge! :-)

2. To finish off this fic, I seriously need to re-watch Children of Earth and to that end I've just finished my re-watch of TW S2. Which, I have to admit, was a lot better than I remembered. I went into most episodes feeling very ambivalent about them, but came out of the most of them having really enjoyed them.

Especially Exit Wounds, which is one of the few I *have* re-watched since its original airing, but I don't remember enjoying it so much. Cut for length )

Anyway. It was good, and I think I'm ready now to re-watch Children of Earth. Won't be tomorrow, because I've got rehearsal in the evening, but hopefully I'll get it in this week, and then still have time to rewatch DW S5 before Christmas. :-)

If anyone's interested, my original reaction post to Exit Wounds is here

(Note: review contains spoilers for Children of Earth)

A very long time ago – on 31 July 2007 so just over two years ago – I took part in a 'pay it forward' meme and [livejournal.com profile] becky_h requested from me a review or commentary of End of Days. I never got round to it, mainly because when I finally was able to rewatch it, it was during a hurried rewatch of the whole of S1 before S2 aired and I didn't feel able to form any interesting thoughts about it.

However, I watched it again last night (as part of another rewatch of Jack's whole story which will hopefully lead to me actually being able to watch Children of Earth again by the time I get there) and found I did have a few thoughts, so here's my review, two years late but better late than never!

I'm not writing a long review because I'm knackered and want my bed, but just wanted to say that I wasn't really that excited about the return of TW but I sat down and watched it tonight and it was one *hell* of a lot better than I expected.

More under the cut - spoilers, obviously )
