OMG. I just finished listening to this and I had to post straight away because it is AWESOME! As I've said before, I am really not into audio only because I find it hard to maintain concentration and I just really, really miss the visuals of the actors' faces etc., but wow. I was excited going into this one because it was about Jack at the Time Agency, but it not only exceeded my expectations, it really blew me away!
What I loved the most is that they got it absolutely perfect. I don't think there was any point at which it felt wrong. Young Jack (or Javic, as I guess we have to call him now) felt exactly as I would have imagined him, and as I've written him myself. Okay, it's not much an extrapolation, given how he was in DW S1 and that John Hart was bascially supposed to be a version of him who didn't grow up, but it really did feel perfect, and it was So. Much. Fun! Loved it.
The story itself didn't really matter much to me, but it was a good one anyway, with plentiful twists and turns, and I love the fact that they really made the most of having two Jacks plus a Shimmer to make it really hard to be sure which Jack was which and who was using the Shimmer. (Plus, *loved* the way JB said "Shimmer!" He sounded like he had as much fun with it as David Tennant did!)
And when I say they made the most of it, I mean they actually had Jack flirting with himself and - well - as far as I could work out, they didn't *quite* say for sure that the flirting went all the way beyond flirting, but I'd say it was very, very strongly implied. It took me right back to late 2007 when a whole load of us took part in fic fest pairing Jack with himself. I never actually posted mine because I lost confidence in it, but I had been thinking about taking another look at it and I'm thinking about it even more now that it's (almost) canon!
And they even had young Jack bring up potential problem of the Blinovitch Limitation Effect, and older Jack tell him that conveniently the vortex manipulators cancel it out. I love it when they actually address things like that, plus it makes a lot of sense, since Time Agents probably *would* get into problems like that occasionally!
This really made the most of the fact that it was audio only. It would have been impossible for JB to have played young Jack and it wouldn't have been anywhere near as good with someone else playing him.
(I am also amused by the photos in the CD booklet which show that the guy playing older Jack is actually apparently quite a bit younger than JB! Even more ironic because a) he's very pretty and b) he looks like he could actually get away with playing a young JB!)
Anyway, another thing that made the most of the fact it was audio only was this way they could bring us the 51st Century and the Time Agency without the constraints of having to show us what it looks like. And, once again, it all felt completely right. All the little futuristic touches, but basically nothing much has changed, and the Time Agency is as bureauctratic and corrupt as we'd always thought.
I really think this is one I'm going to go back to again and again, and I never thought I'd say that about an audio play!
