Thus endeth October, a month bookended (no pun intended) by two works with "Natural History" in the subtitle and some stuff about Charles Darwin and evolution between the covers, even if they're otherwise very different. Should I pretend I did that deliberately?

66. The Feather Thief: Beauty, Obsession, and the Natural History Heist of the Century by Kirk Wallace Johnson )

67. Space Oddity by Catherynne M. Valente )

68. How to Raise an Elephant by Alexander McCall Smith )

69. The World at Night by Babak Tafreshi )

70. Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowmen by Terrance Dicks )

71. The Cipher by Kathe Koja )

72. Ever Since Darwin: Reflections in Natural History by Stephen Jay Gould )

WILLOW: Snyder must be in charge of the volunteer safety program for Halloween this year.
XANDER: Note his interesting take on the volunteer concept.
BUFFY: What's the deal?
XANDER: Oh, a bunch of little kids need people to take them trick-or-treating. Sign up and get your own pack of sugar-hyped little runts for the night.
BUFFY: Yikes. I'll stick to vampires.

Music Meme, Day 3

A song that makes you cry: As I get older there are more pieces of music that seem to bring tears to my eyes, but one song never fails to make me weep, sometimes so hard that I have to force myself to stop; Paul Simon's "An American Tune." Paul Simon does his own song proud, but I find that these days, I love Willie Nelson's version. There's so much weariness laced with stubborn hope in the song's words, and Nelson sings as if he's known every day of that weariness, and gotten up every day with that stubborn hope somewhere in his heart. And the words about coming in the age's most uncertain hour?
Now I weep even more as I listen.

Time just seems to vanish.

Last week was my birthday and I was totally going to make a birthday post, and then just... didn't.

So, belated thank you's to everyone who sent me birthday wishes. <3

And I got fanart from Lee (for my Seeker 'verse), which is very shiny. Not used to fanart. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Although speaking of fanart, then Promethia and I also had a stunning piece of fanart created for The Song of Rowland, so truly my cup currently overfloweth. (Technically the art work is spoilery, although not hugely.)

And fic-wise, then I posted Chapter 5 of Crystal Gets A Boyfriend on my birthday, and then Chapter 6 the week after! (This will probably never happen again. There is usually a month between any updates.)

But enough about me... Have a few links:

No more Disney!Who. 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

UK petition: Scrap the Bathroom Ban

And from the Good Law Project, please sign this open letter: Women in support of the trans+ community.

I feel that there were so many more things I was going to mention, but time has stolen them...

Recs of any sort may be posted at any time, but in addition we have monthly themes. [community profile] tardis_library's theme for October is now closed, and here is our new theme for November:

Multi-Era

"We never change. All these faces, and we never really change."

It's Doctor Who's anniversary month again, so it's time to party and bring out recs for your favourite fanworks that involve elements from more than one era of the show at the same time - whether companions running into companions, time crashes in the TARDIS, multiple Doctors, or UNIT working with Torchwood, classic and new villains teaming up, or whatever other variation on that theme you can come up with!

Post your recs to the community in the normal way any time from now until midnight on 30th November 2025 in your timezone. (See Info & Guidelines for posting template and instructions). Recs posted for monthly themes have their own tag with banners at the end of the year for reccers who posted a rec for 6 or more of each year's themes.

When making your post, add the tag "other: monthly theme". (The mods can take care of any other needed tags if you prefer, but a challenge/theme tag could easily be missed.)

Request List
Anyone may also request any specific recs they'd like to see. (e.g. "Fourth Doctor fic, not on Teaspoon," "Cheerful Bill Potts artwork," "Leela vid," "recent Ten/Rose," etc.) If you are only interested in one medium (fic/vid/art etc/), don't forget to specify.

Current requests:
* Classic Who fanvids, any Doctor/TARDIS team (music, no/minimal audio quotes preferred), especially out there on tumblr/YT - [personal profile] thisbluespirit
* Twelfth Doctor h/c that's not on AO3 (any pairing or gen) - [personal profile] ruuger
* Rose/Nine fic, any genre, anywhere - anon
* Jack/Esther fic (Torchwood) - [personal profile] chamilet
* Babyfic and/or de-age fic, any era/any team - [personal profile] romanajo123
* Fanworks in more unusual media (not Art, Fic, or Vids) - [personal profile] lurking_latinist
* Gen fic featuring the Doctor's scarf any era - [personal profile] liadt
* fic set after Planet of Giants that focus on the events of that story - [personal profile] scifirenegade

Make your requests in the comments here to be added to the list. (Anon commenting is on.) If you make a rec that fills any of these requests, please add the "other: request" tag to your entry so it can be found easily.)

Any other questions? Ask here or at the Info & Guidelines post, or PM the mod.

Title: Peri in Wonderland
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] CommanderBayban
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 600 words
Creator's Summary: Deep within the woods, Peri stumbles upon a tea party.
Characters/Pairings: Peri Brown, Sixth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: Fusion with Alice in Wonderland

Reasons for reccing: This is a fun fusion. The Sixth Doctor fits in well with the sort of wordplay you get in Alice in Wonderland, and Peri makes a good Alice.

Title: "Circular Logic"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Fourteenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 1538

Summary: The Doctor is talking about circles. Donna thinks he's talking nonsense.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes:

I'm coming in just under the wire for my "post a story a month" thing, at least in Pacific Daylight Time. I wanted to call this "Circular Time", but I didn't want to sully the title of the excellent BF audio of that name.

I'd actually written a completely different story for this month, a Blue Rain thing, and I got the first draft done a week ago, but on the first editing read-through, I realized that it was a piece of complete gosa. It was 1.6k words, and the first half was unnecessary and the last quarter was dense. I could salvage it by rewriting the second half, but honestly, the main idea wasn't all that great in the first place.

But luckily, we happened to watch "The Runaway Bride" for the first time in probably five or six years. (My husband just started to pull random blu-rays from the DW shelf and pop in an episode from whatever he grabs; we're currently on "Terror of the Autons".) And that got me thinking about how David Tennant and Catherine Tate couldn't possibly have dreamed that they'd be playing the same characters (more or less for Tennant) seventeen years later. That's where this story came from.

It's not particularly well-written or well-edited, as I only had a few days to work on it AND my days have been filled with Guild Wars 2's new expansion, but here it is.

Just as a note about timing: this story is set on Christmas Eve 2024, and so the Doctor's statement about having met Donna seventeen years earlier is accurate, as they met on Christmas Eve 2007. (Series 1 after "Aliens of London" was in 2006 and Series 2 was in 2007, so "The Runaway Bride" must have been Christmas Eve 2007.)

Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for starting a fic title? One fic per line, ‘A’ and 'The’ do not count for 'a’ and ’t’. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

I love memes like this. I love doing them because I get to think about the things I've done and talk about them. I love reading others' answers because I get to learn about my friends. I saw this meme and went, "Cool, that looks fun and interesting! I gotta do that!"

Then I thought, "Wow, that's a lot of work, sorting through fics to choose one for each letter of the alphabet, and then get the link and add all the info." But, that's in the nature of the meme, so I started working on it.

And then I realized, as I was looking through all my As, that though the meme had passed through my friends' list six times, I hadn't actually read a single title in any of them, much less clicked through to any of them. All I did was scan over the list, look to see what letters each person had missed, and then jump to their discussion about their titles.

To me, the interesting thing about the meme wasn't the titles themselves, but the distribution of letters and the self-evaluation of what that might mean. That's probably true for me for any meme, too. So, I decline to list titles -- I don't need them for my own reference and no one who reads this will care either -- and instead, I list my letter distributions.

Out of 170 works (it says 160 on AO3, but one "fic" is actually a collection of eleven works, so that totals 170):

A: 8
B: 9
C: 7
D: 7
E: 6
F: 12
G: 3
H: 5
I: 2
J: 3
K: none
L: 13
M: 9
N: 4
O: 15
P: 12
Q: none
R: 6
S: 23
T: 16
U: 2
V: none
W: 4
X: none
Y: 3
Z: none

I do not guarantee that this actually adds up to 170.

Total number of unique letters: 21

I think that's actually the smallest total of anyone's I've seen. (Edit: Nope, I'm wrong. There was a 17.) Almost everyone missed the X and the Z, and often the Q, but K and V were commonly covered.

I'm not surprised that S is the most common title starter. After all, S is the most common starting letter in English and alphabetization rules remove "the", "a", and "an" from the count. The one that surprised me is O, coming in just behind T with 15. It looks like I love starting titles with "One", eight of them in total.

I did notice two instances in which I repeated the same letter three times in the row: three Bs a couple of years ago and three Ls back in like 2014. Two of the Ys were due to "You". And only one fic title started with the name of a canon character; some fics mentioned characters in their titles but not directly by their names. One fic title started with the name of the original character.

Musical Meme, Redux*

2. A song that makes you smile

This one was a tad difficult, because I'm more apt to be dour than to smile. Still, this one never fails to make me grin. Lee Know is normally known as part of Stray Kids' danceracha threesome, since he's had a lot of experience as a dancer (he was briefly a backup dancer for BTS before debuting with SKZ) and helps with choreography. He's also the group's "mom" but in this song, he got to be a kid again himself. His voice is actually quite lovely, so listening to this is a pleasure for me. Together the song and its video are absolutely grin-worthy to me.

Here you go.

*I promise I'll try to include music that isn't KPop or the occasional anime intro or outro. But since that's where my musical head has been for the past few months, and probably where it'll be for the foreseeable future, you're going to have to suffer. Or, you know, enjoy. I'll probably have to put this caveat at the bottom of every entry in this meme exercise.

Editor's Note: If your item was not linked, it's because the header lacked the information that we like to give our readers. Please at least give the title, rating, and pairing or characters, and please include the header in the storypost itself, not just in the linking post. Spoiler warnings are also greatly appreciated. Thank you!
