Fairly enjoyable. I went in not expecting much except to enjoy Fifteen, and that was about what I got. The plot was a bit weird and convoluted, and felt extremely unbalanced. Joy was supposed to be the guest companion yet we hardly saw anything of her, and when we did see her, half the time she was being controlled by a briefcase. She was lovely, but I couldn’t really tell you anything about her except that the poor girl lost her mum during Covid. (And I really didn’t appreciate being made to cry by having to actually see said mum in hospital during Covid. That was way, way too close to the bone for someone whose dad died in hospital during Covid and who’s still missing him every Christmas. Not my idea of a fun Christmas episode at all.)
Anita, on the other hand, I adored. A very real-feeling build-up of friendship over a year, understated and subtle, somehow allowing the Doctor to sit still without fretting too much – and then he just jets off and leaves her, and doesn’t go back for her afterwards. (Okay, so he gets her a job at the Time Hotel, but that’s not the same as staying in touch and seeing her again.)
Weird.
Also? It didn’t feel very Christmassy. Somehow, for me, it felt like it would have sat better at New Year, though I’m not sure why I feel that.
I did like the idea of the Time Hotel and hope that shows up again.
And I’m glad Ruby got a cameo, even if I still don’t really get why the Doctor feels she can’t be with him any more. Or why he couldn’t go and visit her while, for instance, he was stuck on Earth for a year…
Oh, and special mention to Joel Fry. I loved Trev. He was so much fun. Would have liked him to be the main companion for the whole episode, if I’m honest!
P.S. Loved Mr Benn’s clothing store. Oh, and the plunger and “Is this armed?”
