Thanks to [personal profile] astrogirl for alerting me to this comm! I was feeling like doing a bit of writing (having frustratingly not managed to produce anything for Fandomtrees) and this is perfect. Because of the length of comments, it feels to me a bit like writing RP tags except as a one-off, and I'm trying not to start any new RP threads at the moment because I'm booked in for a hysterectomy on Tuesday 31st. But I've managed three mini fics so far (all either drabbles or half-drabbles because I can't help but aim for a wordcount as well as a sentence count!) and hope to add more throughout the year. There are tonnes of prompts to go for!

I've been sitting catching up on some of the discussions in my flist about the RTD news (which is fantastic, by the way!) and came to a couple of realisations.

1. That virtually all the DW fans in my flist appear to be more Moffat fans than Davies fans, which made me realise that

2. There is literally no-one left in my flist from those wonderful few years I spent gushing about DW and TW with, and swapping fics and character discussions with. Okay, a handful are still occasionally active on Dreamwidth or LJ, but I don't think any of them watch Doctor Who anymore. I know it was only really a year or two, from 2007 to around 2009 before the joy started to taper out amongst a lot of my friends, but honestly a part of that I think was the fact that RTD was running out of steam, and then there was a year without much Who or TW, and by the time Moffat arrived most people either weren't watching any more or didn't like him much. Hell, I didn't like him much either, though he has grown on me a LOT over the years, especially with the help of lots of meta and explanations from people like [personal profile] elisi.

But I don't think there's anyone left here from that wonderful golden age of my first few years on LJ who I can squee with about the return of the man who made me love Doctor Who, and that makes me sad.

On the other hand, I have lots of newer friends here I can squee with and hope that RTD does even better this time around, now he's had a chance to grow and reflect and learn what works and what doesn't.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't think he was ever perfect. I had plenty of issues with his writing, especially lack of attention to continuity, and second parts of two-parters that didn't feel like they delivered on the expectations set up in the first parts. But I came into the Who fandom off the back of the Buffy fandom, and Davies' Nu Who was definitely set up in the Buffy model, with a wonderful mix of drama and humour and feels, and that's what made me love it, and become a fan rather than just a viewer as I had been with the classic series. And, as I wrote recently, starting to rewatch the Sarah Jane Adventures after rewatching Chibnall's most recent season made me realise how much of that DW has lost.

I'm not expecting miracles, but I am hoping that RTD will deliver me stories that move me and characters I can care about, because that's what I've been missing the last few years!

My first fic posted this year! I have signed up for [community profile] summer_of_giles again though, so should be posting my follow-up fic to Bridge Over Troubled Water on 6 July, plus I have a new Season of Kink bingo card which I may or may not actually manage to write anything for...

But in the meantime, it's [community profile] intoabar time, so here is my contribution!

I really, really enjoyed this. I'm a very visual person so I don't generally get on well with audio-only productions, but this was great!

Here it is - finally! The "big" Jack/Ianto fic from way back in April/May! Enjoy. :-)

Title: Never Meant to Happen

Author's Note: I’ve never been a Jack/Ianto shipper. I came into Torchwood from Doctor Who, as a Jack/Doctor shipper, and I could never see what people saw in Ianto, nor what they thought Jack would see in him.

Then my role-play Jack met a wonderful role-play Ianto, and it finally began to make sense to me. And recently, when I started writing fic again, I decided to try and put some of that into words. This is what happened. It’s only taken me a decade or so to get there. :-D

You know, the one I kept talking about back in about April and May of this year, before Rounds of Kink and Season of Kink and Summer of Giles and then REAL LIFE got in the way?

I seem to have had enough of real life for a bit so this afternoon, after tagging my two RP threads I decided to dive back into a couple of fics, and after having added quite a bit to the one Jack/Giles fic I've had on the go since Bridge Over Troubled Water (it's a sort of sequel), I thought I'd have a look at The Big Jack/Ianto story.

I've changed the tenses, which were all over the place and rather confusing, and tweaked a few bits and actually I think it's very nearly there.

But because it's very abstract, and because the tenses were all over the place and because I've just changed them, I really think I should get someone to do a gentle beta of it. I say gentle because I've invested a lot of emotion into this and I'm actually really pleased with it so I don't want to have to do any mega tearing apart or anything!

Anyone fancy taking a look? It's only 1800 words, nothing huge, but there's quite a lot packed into it!

Okay, so I'm late to the party. Like, eleven years late. I don't do audio plays, as a rule, but I've finally been working my way through a few of them over the last couple of years, starting with the ones focussing more on Jack, because he's what I've always been interested in. But I've started getting more interested in TW in general recently so I've been slogging my way through the Torchwood Collected Radio Dramas (and it has been a slog, tbh, because most of them have been extremely mediocre!) and finally made it to The House of the Dead.

Cut for spoilers, just in case I'm not the last person in the world to listen to this )

I am ridiculously amused by the fact that the next episodes in both my Buffy rewatch and my Torchwood one are called "Sleeper".

Honestly, what are the odds? :-D

Jack and Ianto are fighting over POV in my Rounds of Kink fic, because apparently they *both* want to tell the story! Seriously, I've got about a page written so far, and it's written twice, because I can't decide on POV!

Jack wants to tell it because *all* the fics I've written so far (with the exception of the 'big' one, which switches POV) have been told by Ianto. In fact, in fic, I have hardly written S1/S2 era Jack from inside his head - it's nearly always been from someone else's viewpoint. So I'd kind of like to let him tell this one, as something of a first.

Except that all the J/I I've written over recent years has been in RP and thus from Jack's perspective. So it would kind of be nice to write some from Ianto's POV, now that I have a bit more of a handle on it. And because he's weirdly easy to write. Though I think some of that ease is that what he's writing about is Jack, and obviously I know a lot about Jack and have a lot to say about Jack, but I'm not sure I've really tackled Ianto talking about himself.

Tbh, though, neither of them actually talk about themselves very much. Neither of them is very introspective, they just go with the flow, which is perhaps why I find them both easy to write because that's how I write. Except that I want them to explore themselves a bit, especially because this is another post-KKBB fic, when *everything* about their relationship and their view of each other is changing, so I really want to explore that for both of them. And I think that after that time apart they've both had a chance to actually *do* some of that thinking.

...I think Jack's probably going to win this one. (He does have a very loud voice, after all!) I'll just have to try and get some of Ianto's thoughts and observations across in other ways!

In my (very gradual) uploading of fics to AO3 I have reached the end of July 2008 and the first Jack/Ianto fic I ever wrote - Enough. Set right after Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang which I re-watched a couple of nights ago and have been trawling through meta on ever since, because it really is one of THE best episdoes ever and tells us such an awful lot about, well, everyone!

And fascinating re-reading this fic in the wake of all that because I discovered that I really did have a lot of what I've now decided upon there already. The main issue is that I really hadn't done much thinking about Ianto (partly because he just didn't interest me, partly because all the over-enthusiastic shippers slamming people over the head with the pairing made me really want to avoid it at all costs) and so most of my reading of Ianto in those days was down to the relatively few discussions about him (compared to, say, the Doctor) in my flist and on the very particular characterisation and relationship portrayed by the two people playing Jack and Ianto over at the role-playing game I was immersed in, both of whom were also in my flist and I kind of saw their take on the pairing as the definitive one.

It's taken me a long, long time to move past that. RPing with my own wonderful Ianto over recent years finally got me interested in the character, and I'm now very belatedly going back and re-discovering the relationship - and the character of Ianto - for myself. And while I still don't find him particularly interesting from a sexual POV (not dominant enough, old enough or exciting enough), I am finding his character and his relationship with Jack really fascinating. It is at least as complicated as Jack's relationship with the Doctor, if not more so, and there's a lot of depth there. And now that I've finally figured out, I think, how it all started and what Jack actually sees in Ianto, I'm really enjoying writing it. :-)

Speaking of which, I have signed up for this prompt at [community profile] rounds_of_kink:

Jack/Ianto - Kink: forced orgasm or orgasm denial, humiliation, noise - Prompt: lesson learned the hard way

Due on 13 June - something for you all to look forward to! :-)

And once I've rewatched Fragments, just to check up on those early J/I scenes, I'll see about getting my J/I manifesto/personal canon fic finished and posted too. :-)
