I’m not sure what to think about this episode. It was definitely a let-down after the last two weeks. I enjoyed it enough while I was watching, but then it ended and I felt rather “Is that all?”
There were some good bits: Martha, who had a great storyline; the Doctor and the Master at the end; the whole ‘year of hell’ for the human race, the resetting to just after the American President got zapped :-)…
But I didn’t like the Doctor being old for most of the episode. It was a good idea, and in a book I would have enjoyed it, but having David Tennant basically absent (I know it was his voice, but I’m a visual person) meant we lost the wonderful chemistry between him and John Simm.
Also not enough Jack. The poor guy’s only been back for three episodes, and he might just as well not have been in this one. I mean, what did he actually do? Shoot the TARDIS. I think that was about it. Could have been anyone. I don’t blame him for wanting to go back to his team after that :-)
As for the Face of Boe thing: wtf??? Someone said it’s like someone giving away the end of the story, and I agree. I don’t like the idea. I hope on rewatching (as I can’t remember exactly what was said) that I can see enough ambiguity in what Jack said for it not to mean what it seemed to mean. Or that Jack was joking. Or something.

travels_in_time has done a great post explaining exactly why I dislike this idea so much here
And I don’t like the idea of him ageing. I like my original theory of him ageing in between deaths but then getting ‘reset’ when he dies.
And I didn’t like the wiping out of the whole year cop-out. It was obvious from the start it was coming, because you can’t have ten percent of the world’s population killed and not reverse it somehow, and I hoped they’d find another way out. But they didn’t bother.
Overall, not impressed, and actually extremely disappointed about some things.
