Nicked off [livejournal.com profile] fandom_me:

What's the last thing you wrote?
I started a story on Thursday where Giles and the Ninth Doctor meet and talk about saving the world, for a Buffy/Doctor Who fic exchange. The last thing I actually finished and posted was a drabble, Hurdles, written for a prompt.

Which is interesting, because I rarely write for prompts, and both of those are!

Was it any good?
The drabble? I don't know. I didn't think it was anything special, but I had some nice reviews on it.

What's the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?
Oh, gosh. I have a box upstairs with some of my very first manuscripts. The first thing I can think of that's probably in there was a Ballet Shoes rip-off I started when I was about 9. It never occurred to me to write fanfic. I just took the idea of a story and copied it. I wrote several Ballet Shoes rip-offs and several Chalet School rip-offs. And finally one that was sort of a mixture of both (i.e. newly-formed boarding stage school).

Write poetry?
I used to for school assignments, but I've never particularly liked poetry. I'm definitely a prose girl.

Angsty poetry?
Nope.

Most fun character you ever wrote?
I think I might have to say Spike. He's cool, funny, sexy, has absolutely no inhibitions and I'm having an absolute blast RPing him. I've done a few drabbles and ficlets with him too and he's incredibly easy to write.

Most annoying character you ever wrote?
I don't know. That might be Spike too, actually.

Best plot you ever wrote?
I've always thought I don't write plot, but I've been told that Master Plan has plot so I guess I'll point to that.

Coolest plot twist you ever wrote?
I'm not very good at twists, simply because I'm a very straightforward person and I find thinking in curves really hard. I can't actually think of any at this moment. Oh! Yes I can: Blind. I can't be bothered to explain it, but it was definitely a twist.

How often do you get writer's block?
Quite a lot. Not sure how to quantify it.

How do you fix it?
Make myself actually sit down and try to write, until it gets good. Or even if it doesn't, at least I've written something. I don't try to force it that much these days, though. Most often, I'm not writing because I've got too much else on, or too much in my head.

Do you type or write by hand?
I type these days. I used to write everything longhand first, but now I'm so used to editing as I go that I simply can't do that anymore.

Do you save everything you write?
Absolutely everything.

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?
Oh yes.

What's your favourite thing that you've written?
I always say Constant in answer to that one, but it's a long time since I've read it and it might not be as good as I remember. I'm also extremely pleased with Blind. It's pretty much just porn, but it's hot porn and it developed a plot too.

What's everyone else's favourite thing that you've written?
Connection gets a lot of good references. As does Master Plan.

Do you ever show people your work?
Yep. It's here in my journal for everyone to see. (Well, everyone who's old enough, anyway. *g*)

Who's your favourite constructive critic?
Oh, God, I think my entire flist could be mentioned here! But I have to single out [livejournal.com profile] mad_jaks and [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808 because between them they've beta'd almost everything I've written and are both spectacular at spotting things and suggesting things and generally making my fics a thousand times better than they were before.

Did you ever write a novel?
I've written 21. Mostly in my teens (and mostly that Ballet Shoes/Chalet School idea) and the last of those was finished just before I got married. Then I started getting picky. I've rewritten the first of that series a billion times and one day I really do hope to look at it again and try and get it published.

Have you ever written fantasy, sci-fi, or horror?
I don't think I've done horror. The other two yes, in Buffy and Doctor Who fanfic.

Ever written romance or teen angsty drama?
Yep. See that school story series mentioned above. That has both. *g*

What's one genre you have never written, and probably never will?
Actually, horror, probably. I scare too easily.

How many writing projects are you working on right now?
I honestly don't think I could count the things I've started and not finished. But actually thinking about, if not literally working on? The Giles and Nine thing, the next chapter of Master Plan (thinking, not started), and another Master/Doctor fic which I really must have another look at. So that's three.

Do you want to write for a living?
No. I'm very much a fiction person and I don't think I could ever make enough money at it.

Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?
No.

Have you ever won an award for your writing?
I won my first fandom award the other day, for Connection. That's it, so far.

Ever written something in script or play format?
I've started some plays but never got very far. I have adapted a few plays for the junior drama group I used to run, though.

What is your favourite word?
Really. I use it far too much.

Do you ever write based on yourself?
Well, there's always some of me in everything I write. But even when a character originally starts off as me (e.g. the main POV character in that school series, who was based on 13-year-old me, written by 13-year-old me) they evolve into something of their own as they're written. I think it's actually impossible to completely capture oneself, even if one's trying to.

Which of your characters most resembles you?
Does it sound really weird if I say the Master?

Where do you get ideas for your characters?
Fanfic: the tv shows (or books). Original characters: often based physically on people I know, or actors, but their character is usually just what I need to write the story.

Do you ever write based on your dreams?
No. I don't have that sort of useful dream.

Do you prefer happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?
I hate cliffhangers. Fine for the end of a chapter. Horrible for the end of a fic. I always want to know what happens next – so if it's my story that ends on a cliff-hanger, I have to write more to find out!

I tend towards happy endings. As much as humanly possible.

Have you ever written anything based on an artwork you've seen?
I don't think so.

Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?
Very much so, yes. Always.

Ever write something entirely in chatspeak?
I never, ever write anything in chatspeak.

Does music help you write?
No. I cannot write to music.

Are people surprised and confused when they find out you write well?
Why would they be? I don't get that question.

Quote something you've written.
Contrary to popular belief, Jack Harkness had not always been an enormous slut.
(Bonus points to anyone who remembers what that came from! *g*)

*blushes*

That quotes erm from the thing with Jack losing his virginity... Can't remember the title - I'll come back and read the other comments later and find out.

I know you love it when I go all obscure on you so:
You aren't currently secretly working really hard on a TARDIS BigBang project are you?
