Watched the first episode of this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was what my mum would call a 'romp' - fun, decently paced, with rollickingly good music from Hans Zimmer pushing it along. To be honest, it felt like an RTD Doctor Who episode, obviously helped along by being led by David Tennant - his Phileas felt very much like he could be another fobwatched Doctor - and with other Who alumni popping up (Richard Wilson, who's looking old but still wonderful, and Jason Watkins, Webley from Nightmare in Silver). The other two leads (Abigail and Passepartout) were new to me but I warmed to them immediately and basically thoroughly enjoyed myself.
And by the end I'd got so caught up in it that I'd completely forgotten about the balloon, and laughed with delight whenthe Doctor Phileas asked what it was called, and totally expected the answer to be Tethered Aerial Release Developed In Style! :-D
I've never read the book nor can I remember seeing any other TV adaptations, and if I had I might find it a little jarring to find Passepartout black and Abigail a woman, but as it is it works perfectly for me as a fantasy adventure in a world where such things could (or perhaps that's should have been able to) happen and I think I shall enjoy the rest of it!
