So, er. I'm writing again.
I hadn't even logged in to my personal journal for *months*, and then suddenly something made me want to. I'm not even sure what it was, but I decided to have another look at that unfinished epic of mine, Master Plan. I started reading through it and got totally hooked all over again. And it's so very, very nearly finished. One completed penultimate chapter ready to post and final chapter sorted and shaped out and just needing to be fleshed out in a couple of places.
This time, I'm going to do it. I'm going to get the damn thing finished and posted. Who cares if it's more than twelve years since I started it and over eleven since I abandoned it, and all my original readers have moved on to different fandoms and/or platforms? *I* want it finished.
And also, as I've finally begun to accept that the readers aren't on LJ/DW any more but over at AO3, and as I posted my last fic over at AO3, I've been meaning to get at least some of my old fics posted over there, except time got in the way. But now, I have finally made a start. I posted Part 1 of Master Plan over there last night and Part 2 earlier today, and they've already had 43 hits, so there obviously *are* people still out there reading fic, just not over here any more!
So I'm going to go through the chapters, tweak them a little where they really need it, and post them, hopefully one a day, over on AO3. And by the time I've got to the end of them, I will have finished the last two parts and I will post them too. I promise.

How's you these days?

Wandering back to old fandoms and stuff myself, though mostly Farscape and Tolkien and Star Trek for me. And Highlander Holiday Shortcuts again this year, which makes twelve years of the thing running and I've participated every time. :)

Heh, seems nostalgia is in the air! Hubby and son (who is now nearly 14!!!) are rewatching original Star Trek at the moment so there's a lot of nostalgia there too. (We had Tribbles yesterday. Soooo cute!)
And wow, twelve years without a break is very, very impressive!

My preferred Trek is more DS9 and Voyager, with a side of TNG. TOS I've watched some of, but I have trouble getting through it unless I'm watching with company, and mom's on the road half the year so it's not like I've a lot of opportunity to watch it.
(And it doesn't feel like it's been that long since we last talked regularly, but last I remember mention of your son, he was still a tiny kidlet. *blinks* Time goes so fast. And gods does saying that feel like I walked into a cliche or something.)

Yeah, I remembered you as more of a Next Gen onwards person - didn't you used to have a Q muse chattering around your head? :-D
And oh god yes, I know. It seems like no time at all, but yes, he's nearly 14, and 6' tall and his voice has broken and and... when they tell you to make the most of their childhood because it doesn't last long, they are so right! But he is a lovely boy and very useful now he's so big and grown up, so I'm still enjoying it, just in a different way!

(The more rewatching I do, the more I prefer DS9 the best, Voyager the second, TNG a rather distant third. It just. Doesn't work for me so much anymore.)
Sounds like he's growing up well, and I'm so glad. :)

I'm still (I know, I'm slow, I'm old) struggling to adjust to the new reading culture at AO3 and the separation of fannish activity and fic. I miss the old fandom-based communities and all the friends made in comments!

Yeah, I have several other fics that have been sitting there *nearly* finished for the last decade. It would be lovely to feel they were actually finished.
And oh god yes, I still miss comments and meta discussion. That was the best part of it all, making friends and bouncing ideas off each other. I have no idea where it's all gone these days. Or at least, yeah, I have some idea (Tumblr, Reddit, FB, Plurk - though I haven't explored that one) but none of those seem to have that much of it and definitely not the same feel of community. I miss it a lot. :-(

A lot of the community seems to have gone to Twitter or Discord - the closest I've found is the Yuletide Discord server, which is lovely but obviously not fandoms specific, and hard to check anything more than a day or two back.

I quite like Discord - it's like a bunch of old AOL messenger group chats separated by topic. Let me know if you want an invite to the Yuletide one to check it out.

I'll generate and invite and drop it here when I get home from work :-)

And yay - must be something in the air because I've been going through a lot of old stuff too and finding things I never saw, or don't remember if I saw, the first time around! Good to know I'm not the only one!
