This has just occurred to me, and it's actually rather obvious, but I just hadn't thought about it before.

I write long stuff. It's how I write. I write more words than I need to, and I have a habit of waffling.

I also find it easy to write the Tenth Doctor and the Master, and a lot harder to write Nine (and not just because I haven't seen so much of his season).

This is obviously not some kind of coincidence.

On the other hand, to pick the person whose writing I know best as an example, Becky ([livejournal.com profile] becky_writing / [livejournal.com profile] fandom_me) writes much more succinctly than I do and tends towards shorter fics.

She finds it easy to write the Ninth Doctor, and harder to write Ten and the Master.

Again, obviously not a coincidence.

I feel daft that I didn't work this out before! *g*

(We both find Jack easy, which must say something for his character - perhaps that he's not only omnisexual but omni-writery too!)

...That's actually a really, really, need observation.

Huh.

Nope, I hadn't noticed at all. But it is completely, completely, neat.

I hadn't thought of that either. But yes, that makes total sense.

And I wouldn't have said you waffle. You just occasionally use more words than you necessarily need :)

...perhaps that he's not only omnisexual but omni-writery too!

He totally, totally is. The Doctors can be reclusive; some of the other characters behave about normally; but the Jack-muse always wants to come out and play.

*hops over for a visit*

Well there's a lot of hims to choose from isn't there? Nine's Jack, Torchwood Jack, conman Jack if you've a mind; and of course now, post theyearthatneverwas Jack... Plenty of him to go round for everyone to play with ;-)

Talking can be good too *slow grin*

Need a hankie for that??

Damn I needs me a phonesex icon...
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 03:52 pm (UTC)
oooh... phone sex
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 04:06 pm (UTC)
*gulps*
I have amassed a little collection of classic Who Pertwee, Ainley, Brigadier, trimphone (*squee*), old bakelite phone, field telephone screencaps waiting patiently for the morning I clean them up and wheel them out.

There really does need to be a Jack one ;-)

Oh, that's riiighht...Somebody promised old school phone icons a while back, didn't they? I'd forgotten.
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 08:32 pm (UTC)
OMG was that me? Did I say it in public???

Someone has a Jack!icon which says:

because he can have phonesex with your voicemail

Alas, I can't remember who.
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 03:56 pm (UTC)
Right... I was going to comment on this entry, and now that my coffee's all cleaned up I shall.

I can see how people think Nine is hard to write for- there are only 13 episodes and for those of us that tend to write Jack-centric stuff, Jack's only in 5 of those episdoes with no chance of being in the earlier ones.

Meanwhile Ten has 2 Xmas specials and 26 episodes and Jack could be anywhere inbetween any of the episodes. Also any stories set in the future make more sense with 10 then 9 (although Becky wrote an amazing expection to this)

Some people write great long stuff but stink at short fics, others it's the exact opposite. Know what you can do and stick to it, it's the best way to go.

Right, challenging one's self is good. That's one of the reasons why the "come as you aren't" party should be so wonderful! But I've read too many fics where someone's decided "I shall write for X even through I don't understand/know anything about the character." And seen far too many train wrecks as a result.

But not everyone is lucky enough to have a beta!
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 10:02 pm (UTC)
But TW cafe etc isn't always the answer. I begged about before posting my first nondrabble and sent it off to be beta'd and all they did way say 'yep, it's great' and I wondered why the heck I bothered.
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 04:58 pm (UTC)
Hee! That's a nifty observation. But then there's me--I write Ten and the Master, and I write short things...
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 06:08 pm (UTC)
LOL! OK, point taken. *g* (I can never resist using this icon in response to yours.)
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 07:09 pm (UTC)
you two crack me up!
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 07:15 pm (UTC)
Guh...Now there's an icon...
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 07:21 pm (UTC)
That man just oozes sexiness....
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 09:42 pm (UTC)
So is this more your style?
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 10:03 pm (UTC)
Gee, I wonder why?
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 09:54 pm (UTC)
It doesn't look so much like him, but it kind of taps into some leftover vampire kink I seem to still have lying around from high school. *vbg*
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 10:07 pm (UTC)
I think you're right--I think it's the eyes. And it's too airbrushed, I think. I like it, but I couldn't *talk* to that guy. I feel like I could talk to JB. Or Jack.
