This has just occurred to me, and it's actually rather obvious, but I just hadn't thought about it before.
I write long stuff. It's how I write. I write more words than I need to, and I have a habit of waffling.
I also find it easy to write the Tenth Doctor and the Master, and a lot harder to write Nine (and not just because I haven't seen so much of his season).
This is obviously not some kind of coincidence.
On the other hand, to pick the person whose writing I know best as an example, Becky (
becky_writing /
fandom_me) writes much more succinctly than I do and tends towards shorter fics.
She finds it easy to write the Ninth Doctor, and harder to write Ten and the Master.
Again, obviously not a coincidence.
I feel daft that I didn't work this out before! *g*
(We both find Jack easy, which must say something for his character - perhaps that he's not only omnisexual but omni-writery too!)

And I wouldn't have said you waffle. You just occasionally use more words than you necessarily need :)

Well, I said both of those things. Doesn't that mean I'm waffling? *g*

He totally, totally is. The Doctors can be reclusive; some of the other characters behave about normally; but the Jack-muse always wants to come out and play.

It's a good thing there's so much of him to go round!

Well there's a lot of hims to choose from isn't there? Nine's Jack, Torchwood Jack, conman Jack if you've a mind; and of course now, post theyearthatneverwas Jack... Plenty of him to go round for everyone to play with ;-)

Yes, lots of Jacks to choose from. And I'd bet we all write him just a little bit different too. I expect, for instance, that if you looked you'd find my Jack talks a lot more than Becky's does... *g*

(Haven't got a Jack one...)

I have amassed a little collection of classic Who Pertwee, Ainley, Brigadier, trimphone (*squee*), old bakelite phone, field telephone screencaps waiting patiently for the morning I clean them up and wheel them out.
There really does need to be a Jack one ;-)

There does! I don't think I've ever seen one. :-(

because he can have phonesex with your voicemail
Alas, I can't remember who.

Have to admit, though, I don't really get it.

I can see how people think Nine is hard to write for- there are only 13 episodes and for those of us that tend to write Jack-centric stuff, Jack's only in 5 of those episdoes with no chance of being in the earlier ones.
Meanwhile Ten has 2 Xmas specials and 26 episodes and Jack could be anywhere inbetween any of the episodes. Also any stories set in the future make more sense with 10 then 9 (although Becky wrote an amazing expection to this)
Some people write great long stuff but stink at short fics, others it's the exact opposite. Know what you can do and stick to it, it's the best way to go.

Well, yes, except when you want to challenge yourself - it's good to do a bit of that in between what you're good at - and I'm dying to write some Nine/Jack, but am put off by the fact that I still can't get inside Nine's head and that Becky's already written everything so much better than I could anyway... *g*

Though I'd have thought most things were workable if you have a beta to help you sort it out.

There's nothing lucky about it. There are places to look (e.g. Torchwood Cafe) and failing that just ask someone whose writing you admire. I've seen loads of writers mention that they're always available for at least a quick look over something if you ask nicely.
And yes, I know how incredibly hard it is to ask someone to beta the first time, but honestly, if you're serious about writing, you just have to pluck up the courage and do it.
It took me about a week to pluck up the courage to ask Jades that first time, but I got there in the end, and it was soooo worth it! :-)

I can't speak from experience because I've never really bothered to look there - I was going to but then Jades mentioned something about always being ready to beta so I asked her (would have asked Becky, because I was already betaing her stuff, but I needed someone with Buffy knowledge)...
Actually, I've remembered, there had been a discussion about betaing at Torchwood Meta just before, and that was where Jades had said about being available - just good timing, I guess.
Tbh, I think I'd always go with asking a writer you admire rather than a complete stranger, if you can, because at least you have some knowledge of each other.

Hmm, I don't get vampire from it.
It is a nice picture, and it is sexy, but it's just not him.

Though I feel bad as I know you have the Doctor one too but I don't have the Master one, so you always have to be the Master... *g*
