I was just thinking about The Doctor Dances prior to writing up my review of it (I watched it last night), and I was remembering Rose's chewing of her lip and smouldering eyes and trying to think what they reminded me of – and then it came to me – Lynda from Press Gang!

Yes, I know, probably none of my flist have ever heard of Press Gang, but hear me out. The main thing you need to know is that it was written by Steven Moffat. It was also an incredibly vibrant, sassy, brilliantly-written, brilliantly-acted show – and it was a children's show. I was officially way too old for it when it aired, and I watched it avidly.

Anyway, in this show, there was a character called Spike. Yes, really. (Nicknamed himself after the dog in Tom and Jerry.) And he was the token American character in an English children's tv show. Sound familiar? He was also, in the beginning, a bit of a bad boy, a rebel, who was sent to work on the school newspaper to atone for his sins. Hmmm. He was also (despite the somewhat shaky accent) just a little bit of a charmer. Just a little bit. *g* (I had a major crush on Dexter Fletcher for years because of the way he acted Spike.) But under the brash, confident exterior was a sensitive, rather self-doubting guy.

Oh, and he had the hots for Lynda, the editor, the boss and there was fantastic chemistry between them.

Does any of this ring any bells?

I honestly can't believe I've never seen this before. Even though I got the full set of DVDs of Press Gang for Christmas 2005 and therefore rewatched the entire show literally months after first seeing the first series of New Who.

Duh.
