Not reading anyone else's till I've written mine. Which I'm about to do... :-)

I loved it. I did actually get through the whole of S1 (except Random Shoes) in time and I was liking that more and more the further I got through it, but last night's episode was even better.

In fact, I would go so far as to say it was comparable to some of the Joss-written episodes of Buffy. (In fact, the whole of the first sequence was extremely reminiscent of Buffy's S3 opener, where Buffy had run off after killing Angel and the rest of the team were muddling through without her and she came back in time to save them from vampires with the line, "Hi guys, miss me?" I have a feeling Jack's return here was a very deliberate nod to that.)

Apart from that, it was funny (there were some fantastic lines), it was dramatic, it was sexy, it had suspense and fighting and joking and a really good dynamic between all the characters, and it was SO much better than I was expecting.

And, wait for it, I liked Gwen. (Well, I'd started to at least sympathise with her last season.) Her "No-one else'll have me" made me "Awwww!" Even though it's a really, really bad reason to be getting married.

And I really liked Ianto. He's grown up very nicely since the last series. :-) I loved the way he stood up to Captain John.

God, JM looks old. And not very attractive. Good chemistry with JB, though, and I adored the dynamic between them. A nice glimpse back to pre-DW S1 Jack. Loved the wristband stuff.

A tad annoying that they managed to give us someone from Jack's past and still give us virtually no new information. A few more tidbits would have been fun.

Jack was gorgeous and completely adorable. I'm glad they let a few cracks show through, but let him mostly keep up his old persona. I think they got that about right, though I hope the cracks continue to show and they don't just forget all about it.

OK, I think this post has gone on long enough to be called a review, not a reaction post. And although I prefer not to give a score on first viewing, I loved this. It's getting a 9/10.

Jack was good! Except the bit with Gwen. That was off-putting. But still, he was back to normal!

I don't like the idea of Jack/Gwen because of the implications on Jack's character. I know he's not an angel, but hypocrite!Jack makes me sad.

I completely agree about the 'Buffy' feel to the episode. JM had a lot to do with that, of course, because Captain John was pretty much 'early Spike', but still. If they're going to look to Buffy for inspiration I, for one, am not complaining. This might just be me reading more into it than I should, but John's line "Thirsty now" made me think of vampire!Willow in Doppelgangland ("Bored now"). I'm probably overreaching at this point, but it just resonated for me.

I loved that it wasn't just the 'Captain Jack' show - those little cracks can go on through the whole series, which is just brilliant. Keeps everyone interested.

I probably would have given it an 8 (I though the awful CGI should lose it at least one mark) but still. So much enjoyed!

Yay! I'm glad it wasn't just me. And RTD being a Buffy fan is definitely a good thing. They've really taken it on board, and it works. Woot!

There were 2 truly dreadful CGI bits (IMHO ;)). One where Jack's taking JM down on the lift - the Hub behind them is a matt painting, and you can see the join with the live action. The other was the explosion at the end, where they really didn't get the 'people being thrown off their fit' bit to gel particularly well. But hey, on their budget, I'm surprised we got that much :)

I was pleased too. Went and watched the repeat on BBC three just to catch anything I'd missed... The characterisation in this bodes well for the rest of the series too. Wanting to fast forward to next week!

Abbadon didn't bother me as much as he could have done cos I kept on thinking of the Destroyer in 'Battlefield' as his little cousin, and I thought the Destroyer was quite good at the time (hey, it was the 80s, and low-budget British sci-fi!).

I tend to not get bothered by poor cgi until about the 4th time of watching when I actually notice it!

I think, honestly, Jack wouldn't have touched her with a 10 foot pole while she was with Rhys, and he really did want her to have a normal life. The normal was maybe the appeal, even, and when it all started falling down with Owen he was kind of all disillusioned with her. then came back to find her married and YAY normal again but sad because well. Still not something he can have. I don't think it's a sexual thing. Kinda like 'have a fantastic life, Rose. Do it for me.' I think it's a love thing, and that. That's Jackish for me.

I am so with you, with all of it.

I didn't say a whole heck of a lot, to be honest. Mostly "Oh thank god" and 'yay' with some 'wow' thrown around. I'm just happy.

...That is very true. I never really notice since it all just smacks itself in my inbox.

See, that was totally how I saw it, and am mildly frustrated at how many people are yelling "Jack/Gwen" for good or ill because of that scene.

That scene was *gorgeous* and I loved it. It made me love Jack more, and it helped me keep on liking Gwen. It just. It's sad and nostalgic and maybe a hint of missed opportunity or acknowledging that now he's not gonna shag her, but not. ROMANCE.

That makes sense. I like that. Will have to watch it again.
