This wasn't as bad as I remembered. When I first saw it, I was disappointed because I was expecting – I don't know what I was expecting but it was something more like Doctor Who, not what is basically a variation on the various police/detective serials. I thought it was going to be different.

But this time, knowing what to expect, I enjoyed it a whole lot more. I didn't even find Gwen annoying (yet) even though the entire episode is seen through her eyes. That was quite well done, actually. It made the team nice and mysterious, as well as introducing them, and I liked the way their names were reinforced by having Gwen typing about them while showing each of them playing with their alien toys.

What intrigued me most was how incredibly different Jack was from the Jack we saw in Doctor Who season 1. I watched the two shows in order like this deliberately to get the effect, to go straight from young, cocky, human Jack to much older, in charge of Torchwood Three Jack, but I still wasn't prepared for how different he was. (How different from the Jack we see in Doctor Who season 3, too, because I've seen that a lot more recently too – but we'll worry about that at the end of the season!)

The problem is, I can't quite put my finger on what that huge difference is. What I actually wrote down in my notes was: great hair; very hands on (which I know isn't new! *g*); still got the smile; looks young and vulnerable; gentle; confidence. Perhaps it's the confidence. Before, he had cockiness, now he has confidence. Then there's the air of mystery – for Gwen because of the Captain Jack Harkness having gone missing in 1941, and for us because we're all How the hell did he get there and what's he been doing? It might also be that in Torchwood, he's in charge. However good a leader he may or may not be, he's certainly a very cool one. I have to say, I fell in love all over again.

Other things I noted down:

Contraceptives in the rain? Wtf was that all about?

"What did you see?" "Nothing. There's nothing." Jack's face. Aww.

Did the glove stop the rain? That was confusing.

Awww – Rhys. :-) And Gwen is already lying to him.

Clever the way Gwen being knocked on the head not only got her into the hospital to find the Weevil, but also reinforced the idea that she could be seeing things – not that they played on that as much as they could have done.

Going to the pizza place and asking about CJH was a bit of a long-shot, wasn't it???

"I'm getting tired of following you." "No you're not. And you never will." There's that confidence! *g*

Love Gwen asking why people don't fall down the lift when the paving stone's down at the bottom. I want to know the answer to that one too!

The moment in the bar when Jack asks, "How's your drink?" and they both just look at each other. That was very hot.

Susie apologising for not knifing Gwen and having to search for her gun in her bag. Very funny.

Jack's face when Susie shoots herself. God, the guy hurts for everyone, doesn't he?

I am looking forward to the next episode. Much more than I thought I would be.
