I didn't get to see this till last night, as we actually went out to the cinema on Saturday (for the first time since Serenity!!!) to see Becoming Jane, which I really enjoyed, though I probably wouldn't have done if I'd actually remembered anything about Jane Austen's life because then I'd have been muttering about how inaccurate it was.

Anyway...

I really, really enjoyed this. I was trying not to expect too much, so I didn’t get disappointed, but I enjoyed every minute of this. There was a lot of humour (a lot of it from David Tennant’s facial expressions and flirtiness) and great chemistry between Martha and the Doctor.

I have to admit, I was disappointed to find that Martha’s another one with a London accent, though at least it’s not as pronounced as Rose’s. I know this makes me a snob, but to me that accent just makes people sound thick.

However, I think I’m going to like Martha a lot more than Rose. I didn’t dislike Rose, but she was a bit of a bimbo. Martha seems a lot sharper, and more fun, more able to trade jokes with the Doctor and not needing everything explained to her. I loved the fact that she had noticed all the previous alien sightings and made sense out of them. And the way she used her knowledge of his two hearts when performing CPR.

I thought the kiss was fun, as it totally clear it didn’t mean anything and was just the Doctor finding a way for Martha to delay the alien police without having to come up with something herself. All right, I’m sure there were other ways he could have transferred some DNA, but it seems like a very Doctorish thing to do, to do it a fun way.

I liked the reference to Martha’s ‘cousin’ at Canary Wharf. I wondered how they were going to get round that one.

And I liked the way they introduced Martha’s huge family with all the phone calls, one after another. OK, so it was a bit hard to follow who was who just from that, but it stopped it getting boring.

The vampire/alien totally grossed me out. Don’t ask me why I should find a straw so much grosser than fangs, but I did. Brilliant scene though with the Doctor pretending to be human so she’d drink his blood and show up on the scanners - absolutely hilarious!

I didn’t get the reference to Zovirax because I’d never actually noticed what the product was called, but both hubby and I immediately thought of the advert as soon as we saw the first helmet guy :-)

The special effects of the spaceships arriving on the moon were terrific. I normally hate anything CGI because it just does not look at all realistic, but this did. On the other hand, they did seem like awfully big ships housing an awful lot of aliens for just one little hospital!

I liked the guy welcoming the aliens and trying to get things off to a peaceful start. How refreshingly sensible!

I adored Martha discovering the TARDIS, and the Doctor mouthing along with her “it’s bigger on the inside”. I love in-jokes like that.

I liked the fact that there wasn’t actually much plot, which gave Martha and the Doctor plenty of time to have fun together.

I'm always rather hesitant about assigning a score to an episode upon my first viewing, because you only ever get to see something for the first time once and it's got to stand up to repeat viewings to be a great episode, but I enjoyed it so much I feel I've got to give it, at least until I've seen it again, 9/10.

ETA Demoted to 8.5/10 after second viewing because it did seem a bit plot-light second time around, but still very enjoyable.
