I really enjoyed this. I wasn’t blown away, but I was happily satisfied, and mainly because DONNA, and not just Donna but Donna got fixed. At last. Thank you, Russell!

I’m aware there’s been a whole big THING about the whole “you wouldn’t think of letting go because you’re male-presenting” remark, which struck me as unfortunately phrased – why not make it specific to Ten/Fourteen with his whole “I don’t want to go” thing, or even just leave it at the fact that the metacrisis had been split between two people and not bring gender into it at all? But that’s been talked to death in every forum I’ve seen so I’m not going to go into it here. I’m just going to enjoy the fact that RTD has undone the horrible, unforgiveable thing he did to Donna all those years ago and she can once again be the amazing, incredible woman she was with the Doctor.

Other things I liked:

Rose. Really cool and a very interesting character, even if she does look way too old to be (presumably) 14 years old! I liked the way they handled the fact that she was transgender – not making too much of it but addressing some of the issues all the same.

(And as a 50-something who knows a couple of young people who are transitioning, it was really reassuring to be shown I’m not the only person having trouble getting their head around thinking of people as a different gender and using different pronouns. You can be understanding of it and supportive of it, and yet still have trouble remembering!)

I even quite enjoyed Sylvia this time around! And Shaun seems like a decent background character.

Wilf being taken care of by UNIT. That Kate Stewart is a good woman.

New TARDIS interior – thank god we’ve got rid of those horrible tree trunk things. This felt huge and so nice to go back to something very classic-looking.

Less good things: mainly the effects, which is weird given that the budget is presumably so much higher these days! I thought the Meep looked really fake (mainly the eyes), as did all the giant cracks in streets etc.

I got confused at the time by the Winter Soldier-type list of words leading up to Donna becoming the Doctor-Donna again, but then someone reminded me about the TARDIS telepathic password (petrichor etc.) in The Doctor’s Wife so I guess a list of words makes sense in a Time Lord context.

But anyway, I enjoyed it. It’s such a relief to have something light and fun and fast-paced again, and I’m very much looking forward to the next one!

P.S. Has Fourteen modelled his new coat on Jack’s???
