I haven't done a meme in years and years, but I'm trying to be a little more active and actually engage with people as there is a danger, as lockdown goes on, of just retreating happily into my shell, so this is me putting out something other than fic and the occasional episode review! :-D
1. Why did you start writing fanfic?
2. Why do you write fanfic?
3. How do you choose fandoms and why do you choose them?
4. Do you have themes or plot devices you return to?
5. Do you have any pet peeves?
6. Which story/stories are you the most proud over and why?
1. Why did you start writing fanfic?
Because everyone else was! I arrived on LJ in early 2007, found the Torchwood fandom, found a group of wonderful writers in the Torchwood (and Doctor Who) fandom, and got inspired by them all! We all very much centred around writing about Captain Jack Harkness ("Jack is our fandom", we used to say) and even now I write very little without Jack in it, and I still roleplay him too.
2. Why do you write fanfic?
To explore the characters I find fascinating. The vast majority of my fics are character studies. Even most of the porn I've written is usually there to explore some element of the characters and their relationships with each other.
3. How do you choose fandoms and why do you choose them?
I am strongly of the opinion that you don't choose fandoms, they choose you. Usually because there's a character or two (or more) who eat your brain and you can't stop thinking about them, so you go to find out more, and it's a slippery slope from there!
On the more specific note of my enduring fandom of Captain Jack Harkness: I've been a JB fan ever since I saw him in Phantom at the age of 24, but I really lucked out when he got cast as such a wonderful, three-dimensional character with sooooo much to explore in Doctor Who/Torchwood! I can't believe that 13 years on I am still finding out new things about him!
4. Do you have themes or plot devices you return to?
Hurt/comfort, kink and porn. Or, even better, hurt/comfort with kinky porn. I like strong emotions, and I like feel-good fics (I read and write to escape after all) and all these types of fics tend to end up making you feel good by the end (even if you've had a good cry in the middle)!
5. Do you have any pet peeves?
About my own writing? I wish I could write plot. Not a lot, but just to be able to come up with some ideas for actual actiony things as examples or whatever when I need to put them in a fic! For a writer, I am not really very creative - I can draw on and extrapolate ideas other people have had but I find it very hard to come up with new stuff myself. I guess that's why I've done so much better at fanfic than original fic! :-D
6. Which story/stories are you the most proud over and why?
Master Plan because of the crazy Master POV and because I actually wrote plot in that one, and relationships between more than two people. I'm especially proud of it because I've finally managed to FINISH it and bring it back to canon!
The Connection verse because Jack/Giles just seems to work better and better the more I write it and it's really nice to have Jack in a healthy relationship that's actually good for him! (And I must get round to adding the later ficlets over to AO3 now that I've finished that second part, and then to finishing the post-COE fic I started umpteen years ago and never quite got finished either!)
A Little Matter of Life and Death which is another Torchwood/Buffy crossover, this time Jack/Angel. It's a very satisfying, and rather hot, little story.
More which is one of my very few Jack/Ianto fics, but it also had definite shades of Jack/Doctor and it's very hot and rather clever and one of those things I look back at and ask, Did I really write that? :-D
(The last two aren't on AO3 yet because I'm moving my fics over one at a time roughly in order of writing them and these two came a little later. I'll get to them soon!)
