DW Confidential/Bad Wolf
Just watched the Doctor Who Confidential (BBC3 are showing them along with the episodes) for The End of the World, which goes beyond that episode and into the realm of previous Who aliens and monsters, and it was lovely to see interviews with Peter Davison and Tom Baker (there was a bit of Colin Baker too, but he's just gross now so that wasn't so lovely), and clips from their series.
Sorry, not much point to that - I just wanted to share.
And after that, I noticed that the telly had recorded Bad Wolf, so I decided (in the interests of research, you understand, for my writing, especially as I've always watched with hubby till now so was never able to pause and rewind etc.) to have a little peak at the bit with naked Captain Jack and the Trinny and Susannah bots. And... phwoar! I'm all a-flutter now :-)
I'll stop spamming now. As I said, just wanted to share :-)

Biggest disappointment...
Re: Biggest disappointment...
We did get topless!Jack, at least... :-)
Re: Biggest disappointment...
Yes, you're right about JB looking impossibly pretty, and jaw-droppingly stunningly gorgeous (way more, for me, in TW than DW).
"there are plenty of other things to complain about in Torchwood,...)"
So very, very, very true. Like it seeming like the Gwen Cooper and Owen Harper Show, Featuring Special Guest Star Captain Jack Harkness... like the writing/characterizations... like topless Jack in the dark so it was hard to see him and enjoy and appreciate the view... *sigh* Like Jack seemingly having lost his brain and his personality... argh!
I'll stop ranting in your lj now. *blush*
Re: Biggest disappointment...
And rant away. It's nice to talk, and it doesn't happen much on my lj because other people think of far more interesting topics to talk about than I do!
Re: Biggest disappointment...
Heh, hope you don't like Gwen, because I'm sure I'd really, really, really rant about her... and Owen.
Re: Biggest disappointment...
Master Plan Part 3 is up too now, in case you haven't got that far... *g*
And I don't hate Gwen - I just don't get her. She does annoy me rather, mainly by taking screentime away from Jack.
Owen... Does annoy me, but only inasmuch as the character is supposed to annoy you. And I don't find him at all attractive. But he's a really interesting character.

Oooooooooooooooooooo... so that's why I had to scroll down a bit, when I refreshed the page! *scurries off to read*
mainly by taking screentime away from Jack.
That's a huge annoyance, true. So's Gwen having no function at Torchwood Three that I can see... ie., Ianto is reception, looks after the Hub, logistics, etc. Tosh is their computer person, Owen's their forensics expert... I haven't seen any kind of expertise from Gwen.
I reacted badly to Owen "perfume spray" but was recovering from it (even though I have no wish to see him without clothes)... but shooting Jack, killing him, firing a couple of more times... that's killed Owen for me, as a character. I'd've been fine with Jack, if he'd said, "I forgive you", hugged Owen, and then used RetCon on him, because he can't trust him (same case can be made for the others but at least they didn't pull the trigger). I'd be fine with Owen being killed/written out, and Burn playing his identical twin brother, just as snarky but with a few morals.
Otoh, a character I still find fascinating is Kerr Avon from Blakes 7, if you ever watched it. He could be a very nasty piece of work but I found him so damn interesting to watch. I'd love to see Paul Darrow show up on TW.
Re: Biggest disappointment...
Let me know what you think. I really do appreciate all forms of feedback, from squee to "You should have done it like this"! :-)
Gwen, I guess, is supposed to be the Xander of Torchwood (sorry if you don't know Buffy, but it's my main comparison, especially as RTD confesses to being a big fan) - the one without any special talents, the heart of the group, the one who can connect with people, who sees things... Actually, Xander was pretty unlikeable too sometimes... Interesting.
Owen, I agree but when I watched (and I have only watched TW once, as I'm waiting for the whole series DVD pack in November) I don't remember feeling as strongly about it as you do.
As for Avon - oh yeah. Loved him. The rest of the gang were pretty boring (especially Blake!) but Avon just made the show. I used to watch it a bit with my mum when I was a child, and then hubby and I watched the first four (I think) seasons a couple of years ago when they were re-showing them, and really enjoyed Avon glowering away and making sarky comments and stabbing people in the back.
Not sure I'd want to see PD on Torchwood, though. Or at least, I just can't imagine that.
Re: Biggest disappointment...
Okay. I do agree in Part 2, it seems like Jack gives in too easily, but maybe I just want to see him being fiery and defiant. I'm... hmmm... is enjoying the proper word, for a painful story? intrigued so far by the story. re: tenses used, I like past tense but present tense works for this one. I'm fine with first person p.o.v. and have read lots of books that are written that way.
I'd love to read Jack's soliloquy that you wrote... any chance you'll post it sometime? Even if it's after this story is completed, to see if you can get Jack's p.o.v. across without going to his p.o.v.?
I think I'm going to post a question to your One Question meme now...
Yeah, I watched the first three seasons, some fourth, some fifth, some sixth, and seventh. See, I'm still not seeing Gwen's heart... I'm going with the snarky posters of TWoP and saying that if she's the "heart", then it's been ripped out, for Torchwood itself to use. At least Xander, in the third season, bought the prom dress for Cordy, without any expectations for himself. Jack should be perfectly capable of connecting with people (see the last five eps of DW, series 1) and see things. So many moments with Gwen bugged... questioning Jack about Estelle, after the latter died (yes, we needed the information, but there should have been a way to write that scene so both Jack and Gwen are sympathetic in it)... Gwen busting murdering poor Suzie out of TW3, to see her dying dad... hey, Gwen, remember Suzie? The woman who was going to kill you and had no hesitation killing Jack? Near the end of CJH, when Jack and Tosh return, and Gwen's overjoyed to see them... and she doesn't even notice Jack's crying/been crying?!? Bah! Some "heart". That's not even taking into account her treatment of Rhys.
Owen - that's fine, we can disagree. *grin* I've watched the first nine episodes twice, and have the rest to rewatch. I think it's a shame though, that after thirteen episodes, the only character I care about is Jack... and I'm not sure if I'd even care about him, without having seen him in DW first. I'd be fine with Gwen being dumped (yeah, I know it's not happening) and Kathy Swanson, the police officer who was singularly unimpressed by Jack in "They Keep Killing Suzie" became a member of Torchwood Three. I also wouldn't mind if a twisty time travel story was written, so Gwen died instead in "The Unquiet Dead" and Gwyneth came to TW's present and joined them. I actually liked her, unlike Gwen.
Avon! Woohoo! We agree on someone (besides Jack)! :) I loved the scenes with Avon and Vila, so really, both of them shined for me. I thought I'd've liked Blake the most, but nope, I was very meh! on him. Did you realize that Ed Morgan, from "Ghost Machine", was played by Blake himself, Gareth Thomas? I realized it when Owen was looking at a picture of Ed on his computer, talking about him being in and out of hospitals, and the picture was supposed to be around 1991. I think it'd be fun to have Paul Darrow and Michael Keating as bickering aliens, brought to our planet by the Rift, and Jack has to figure out how to send them home/back on their way.
Btw, have you written a third drabble yet (or short story) with poor, chained Jack rescued from Spike?!? Argh!!!!! Poor Jack!
Re: Biggest disappointment...
It's lovely, isn't it?
Thanks for commenting about my fic - it's so helpful (and happy-making) to know what people think!
I was thinking of posting Jack's soliloquy as a little insert at some point, but tbh I actually used all the physical things that happened in it in Part 3 - the Master leaving him alone, Jack taking off his boots and sitting in the corner and thinking. And what's left was very much just exposition. Having re-read it after finishing Part 3, it's really not needed now. It did its job of letting me work out Jack's motivation, so I'm glad I did it, but it wasn't as great as I thought it was at the time and I'm not now going to post it.
On the other hand, if you want to see a very good explanation of the sort of thing that was in there, see
Re Gwen. I said "supposed" to be the heart. I didn't mean it had worked. *g*
the only character I care about is Jack
Agreed. Tosh is quite cute, but I don't really know enough about her to say I care about her. And, as I said, Owen's interesting, but ditto on the caring. I'm looking forward to Martha joining the team. I like Martha.
Re Gareth Thomas. Neither hubby nor I recognised him during the episode, but we recognised the name at once when I did my usual imdb 'who have we seen before' after-episode search. He hasn't aged well!
Re Jack/Spike. Nope, no more. I wasn't planning on writing any more on that, I'm afraid. I'm sure Jack will get out of there eventually, even if he has to seduce Spike with his beautiful body to do it, but at the moment he's still hanging there... *g*
And thank you for all this. I've really enjoyed 'talking' to you today.

You're welcome. :) I still have six page downs to go, to finish Part 3, because it's tough to read about Jack like that. I'll read through the comments too when I'm done.

Yes, and Ianto does look good in a suit, so I'm fine with him being eye candy and that's why I'll let him off, for the thirteenth episode, (I can be shallow, right? Right?!? Right?!?!?) but Gwen and Owen have overstayed their welcome with me.
Re: Gareth Thomas, yeah, I didn't recognize him either. If I hadn't seen the picture on Owen's monitor, I'd've had no idea who it was.

Write it, write it, write it, write it, write it!!!!!! *chants annoyingly until you give in and write either the others rescuing Jack, or Jack seducing his way out of there*
And thank you for all this. I've really enjoyed 'talking' to you today.
Yay! Glad I didn't annoy you. *grin* I have, too. :)
Re: Biggest disappointment...
Sorry you've having a hard time reading my fic. I promise Jack will come through it OK. And he is enjoying himself a bit, even now. :-)

The writing is good. The concept is uncomfortable.

Re: Biggest disappointment...
The concept is uncomfortable. That seems to be the general consensus. Looks like I'm doing something right! *g*
