Seriously - if someone's died or there's Big Trauma in his background it could be justified, though that'd likely rip the hell out of your story. I"m sorry I didn't say something, I just really figured you'd found a hook to make it work.

It's OK - I read through it last night before going to bed and realised then - but yeah, I think there's enough trauma to justify it. It's set just one day after LotTL. *g*

Oh, good. You might want to work something in there to acknowledge that yeah, you know that Jack doesn't drink a lot in canon, so no one calls you out for it. Also, is it set after LotTL or between the Master's death and the end?

Already got Jack thinking about how drinking is so not a good idea, and why, so yeah, already there.

It's one day after the end of LotTL. Here, have a (very unedited) snippet:

Jack really hadn't expect to see the Doctor again yet. Not for a very long time, in fact. Maybe not 140 years this time, but he'd been prepared for a decade or two.

But he's only been back at Torchwood one day. One day, and he hears the TARDIS materialise inside the Hub. Sees the Doctor step out, in a daze of pain and misery.

It's been longer than a day for the Doctor. He doesn't know how long, but long enough for the Doctor to realise he wasn't as all right as he'd seemed when they said goodbye. Jack had known he wasn't coping, not really, but he'd hoped the Doctor would get through it without him. He'd wanted to get away. Hadn't felt capable of holding the Doctor's hand through his mourning, not with so much to come to terms to himself.

Apparently he doesn't get a choice about that. The Doctor's back, and Jack's holding his hand.

Metaphorically. They don't hold hands. They're guys.

Bwah.

So he takes him out for a drink... *g*

Anyway, have to go out now. Back later!

We haven't seen him drink. He probably does when he's not so intent on keeping a clear head. That's my take on it, anyway.

That's actually a really, really, damn good point I should have realized/made, had I been less wrapped up in my own story-writing scramble.

MY Personal canon of Jack says he Does Not Drink Unless Someone Is Dead and then it's only from his own stock. That is MY canon, not canon.

It's probably somewhere between the two, isn't it, really? Jack drinks when he isn't so intent on keeping a clear head, but his life is such that he can only really let his mind wander when he's traumatised, and needs to.

It's fascinating that they've made a character who's only seen drinking water, yet they haven't commented on it (that I've seen). I wonder if it'll get expanded on.

They commented in a deleted scene with some throwaway line about needing to travel.

I really wonder if they're going to do anything with it, but meanwhile it's pretty fair game and we're free to make up our own reasons. Though, honestly, my own canon is cracked and has nothing to do with needing a clear head for work. It's more paranoia and the nature of retcon.

(and again - MY rationalization for it. Anything anyone else does that is supported is gold with me, and I'll roll with it for fic, you know?)

Of course, it might be true to say (I can't remember) that we've never actually seen the Doctor drink either...? *G*

Hm, I'm fairly sure I've read some obscure canon that says he can. I'll have to look this up now.

(Although the obvious reason for not seeing the Doctor drink is that would not make for a good role model. The Beeb would get slaughtered for encouraging binge drinking in the under twelves. Or something. (It'd be hilarious.))

I still say if they haven't shown it to us on the screen it doesn't even count *G*. I'm just tossing out random bits of things I've walked into - and HOMG there's a lot of it. Probably WHY i'm so hard-core 'if it's not on the screen, it's not canon' in DW-verse. After several decades, I think that's quite enough, thank you.

Well, if you two could just sort that out for me while i'm out... *g*

But it's in orange, and that means book, rather than TV canon.

Oddly enough, the only thing in red (TV canon) that he drinks is tea. They missed the banana daquiri. *g* But--he was faking drunk in that scene to get close enough to pour the anti-oil on the robots, so...I dunno.

I've seen people take the route that Time Lords can get drunk if they WANT to.

I don't read the books and I have never considered them as anything more than optional canon. Same with Buffy, where I did read a few of the books, before realising there was much better stuff available free on the Net. *g*

Just passing by and providing supporting evidence for your canon:

We do see Jack drink. Twice. Once in "Small Worlds" when he's telling Gwen about Estelle and Lahore. Once at the end of "Captain Jack Harkness" with Tosh. I haven't got a clue about alcoholic drinks, but the cap is here for more knowledgeable souls.

So. I'd say yours is a pretty good theory :D

Yep! I think I focus more on the 'his own stock' more than some others in fandom, but it's a Thing in my head. I know it's flexible and can be played with by others, but it won't *budge* in mine.

Which is weird, cause I'm not usually rigid about these things.

Yeah, I did know he drank on those two occasions in TW, so I figured he wasn't totally dry. And whilst I'm fine with Becky's 'own stash' canon in her writing, I like the idea of Jack occasionally going out and having a drink, when he feels he needs one.

In fact, I just realised I had Jack drinking two pints and an indefinite amount of whisky in Connection which nobody (not even my beta *g*) seemed to think was a problem.

So. Now I'm torn between leaving them drunk with a little bit of explanation that they really needed a drink - or having them both sitting there in the pub with pints of water. Oh, but

donutsweeper did that with Fraser and Jack, so it's not exactly original.

And the thing is, once I got them arguing, I realised I didn't need them to be drunk anyway. Hmmm. Think I'll just keep writing towards the end and go back to the beginning when I've decided.

Thanks, but having had another look at it I think I'm going to leave them drinking. They don't need to be very drunk, and I can't be bothered to change all the references to drinking! :-)

Yeah, I agree. I just - I had a pub that serves real ale, which is something he'd been here long enough to have fostered a taste for - and then realised I had to explain how much he'd actually been drinking, and whether it was lately or longer ago during the 140 years, or what...

At least I realised. Though I'm sure whoever ends up betaing for me would have thought of it too. :-)

Oh yeah, it's good to realise these things before you post them! I'm sure blokes can bond perfectly well over a pint of water, though.

Oh yes, we did definitely seem him drink after Estelle and the real Captain Jack. :-)

I like that Jack doesn't (usually) drink, because I don't and he may be the only slashable boy I have that in common with... that said, I'm not calling anyone on it because 99% of fic is AU anyway.

My theory, which is mine, is that he doesn't drink because so many of the people he knows DO, and so he can take advantage of them right and left. (OK, admittedly that's rather an evil!Jack characterization, but it makes me smile.)

Well, I have to say I'm drinking less and less these days so, yeah, it is easy to write someone who's similiar in that respect!
