Jack walked away from the TARDIS without looking back. He hadn’t had an invitation to come along this time. He’d just got dropped off back home with his Vortex Manipulator set back to pretty-much-useless again and he hadn’t argued. Maybe because he knew he hadn’t actually accomplished anything by using it to teleport to the Doctor anyway. Him being there hadn’t actually done anything. (Unlike last time, with the Master, when Jack had got the three of them back to the Earth from the end of the universe, and up to the Valiant, and Martha back down to walk the Earth to spread the news of the Doctor… So maybe it hadn’t even been him the Doctor needed that time – just his wristcomp.)

Whatever the situation, he hadn’t argued because he didn’t need the Doctor like he used to. He’d spent 140 years waiting for an explanation, an acknowledgement; he’d got them and at last he’d been able to move on. He didn’t pine for the Doctor anymore. The Doctor he’d loved was gone. Maybe the Jack the Doctor had loved was gone. He knew the Doctor still wasn’t really comfortable around his Wrongness, and he couldn’t blame him.

They’d look each other up in times of crisis, and that was it. For the rest of the time, well, Jack had got his own team now. Which had some vacancies.

He looked across at Mickey and Martha with a grin. “So, you two. Do I even need to ask if you’d like a job?”

Jack walked away from the TARDIS without looking back
*gulps* what an intro...

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't going to mention that...
Yes sad too - *snuggles you*

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
85% of fandom (random figure snatched from the air) will carry on writing whatever the hell they want to - it's kind of the point *VBG*

I really shouldn't be talking to people - I'm in a foul mood.

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing - I just- feel like I'm spoiling for a fight or something...?

If - I say *if* - I were the sort of person to participate in fandom wank I think today would be the day I could hurl vitriol that would stick...

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
nah I'd feel awful a nanosecond after hitting send and then just want to curl up and die/runaway very fast....

*accepts gratefully*

I've got some bricks handy! But I decided to hand out chocolate instead.

::hugs::

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
mmmm chocolate....

Well ther goes my diet :D

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
t's really dark chocolate, low in fat, loaded with antioxidants. Also it's... magic chocolate. Calorie free. :)

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh *magic* chocolate well that's okay then *snarfles*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*gulp* oh my, poor Jack. Very very realistic, but poor jack!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
true, true... but more poor Jack in my mind because damnit, the Doctor should treat him better!

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The Doctor is kind of a rear end to Jack. Which makes me wonder, why?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
because Ten is a *bleeep*?

*puts on innocent face*

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
But he's not like that to his other companions.

Well, okay, Martha would like to respectfully disagree...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* I've often wondered if Ten feels it necessary to push Jack away because unlike all his previous companions Jack doesn't have a time-limit. In theory Jack could actually outlive the Doctor. For everyone else the Doctor knows there is this point where they'll have to part- age or illness or death or a love interest or whatever will separate them. That's not the case with Jack so he's making a preemptive strike

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a very good point there. *ponders*

I was thinking earlier that all the companions walking away at the end of JE, no muss, no fuss, is sort of a pre-emptive strike on their part at the Doctor's habit of dumping them. They've got used to it, and this time they're leaving first.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
oh yeah *nods* they left him before he could shove them out the door.

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you bragging, or complaining? :D

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a point there. Well, consider CE's instead, is that better? He's the actual one who made the decision to leave Jack, after all.

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw! Poor Jack! I mean, I agree, I think he's over the Doctor (except that I think he'll always come running in a second if the Doctor needs him, or even his wrist-comp, but he's not so much into that "my whole life is about waiting for the Doctor to show up" anymore) but it's still sad. I'm still more than a little irritated that he got put through over a hundred years of waiting and watching, and got just an "Oh, yeah, you freaked me out and I left, sorry" for it.

But Jack's resilient, more than anything else, and yeah, he has his own team now. Which, as we all noticed, does have a couple of vacancies. :D

Thank you so much! *is all sniffly from birthday-fic awesomeness*

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Which I know is what I was supposed to get from the end of LotTL, but it's taken me till now instead. *g*

Heh. You're not alone there by any means. In fact I have mentioned to others that Jack is, at this point, a heck of a lot more accepting and OK with things than I am. *g*

Yep, the whole weekend was lots of fun! New Orleans and Gulfport, beignets and beaches, mmmm.

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Which I know is what I was supposed to get from the end of LotTL, but it's taken me till now instead.

Me too. I just had an emotional epiphany less than a week ago that somehow made it work for me. And it certainly wasn't thanks to LotTL!

(I've started in the wrong place here, but lovely fic. Jack's realization about the wrist comp was the saddest thing to me, I think.)

Great fic!

The Episode That Never Was vs. JE

[identity profile] mickeyk.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
(can you tell how much I hate the S3 finale?)

I actually thought Jack got more to do in the S4 finale, than he did in the S3 one. TSE/JE he killed a Dalek in each episode.

U/TSoD/ahem... there was nothing, his Vortex Manipulator got them back to Earth and onto the Valiant and Martha back to Earth to walk for a year... but since Jack also had the hand, the Master could turn the Doctor into Tweety Bird Doctor.

On the whole I'll take the ending for S4.

I like the fic though, and I'd love to see you write one where Jack and the Doctor meet up again and become close (well, closer than they are now).

Hey, did you see I committed fic? If you want to read a short story with Jack and Sarah Jane, go over to my lj. It's rated G so you might not be interested.

Re: The Episode That Never Was vs. JE

[identity profile] mickeyk.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
And at this point I have to admit to not having rewatched the S4 finale to look for evidence that he hadn't done anything useful... *g*

Heh. That's me about S3.

Though I figured Rose would have shot the Dalek that shot the Doctor after a moment anyway. Which other one did he kill? I don't remember.

I didn't. If Jack hadn't shown up, I thought the Doctor and Rose would have died, since she hadn't even carried it, ready to shoot it, she was just holding on to it.

The other Dalek was on the ship, when Daleks started to show up. I believe Jack ran into the TARDIS, grabbed a huge gun for himself and tossed one to Mickey and then Jack destroyed his second Dalek.

I haven't noticed your fic anywhere, no - sorry - but will add it to my reading list for when I actually feel like reading fic. I'm having a bit of a lack of attention span at the moment. :-(

(And I do actually read G-rated stuff, you know. Hey, I actually write it occasionally, too - see above! *g*)

Heh, I didn't want you to feel pressured to read it if it didn't sound appealing to you.

I can understand going off fic after the finale, I did that last year and didn't read much after the finale until I started to a couple of months ago.

It's at the top of my lj right now, and if I update my lj at the same rate as last time, it's likely to remain the top for almost a year. *grin*

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwwwww. Although my Jack will never get over the Doctor, but I'm happy for one who can, especially if shows up with Mickey and Martha in tow.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Understood. For me it's just still as real and raw for Jack now as ever. In fact, I'm working on a Jack/Donna fic that kind of spells out and reiterates just how primary it still is.

But that's just an interpretation, not a debate or wank.

[identity profile] laurab1.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I love that :)
