Jack walked away from the TARDIS without looking back. He hadn’t had an invitation to come along this time. He’d just got dropped off back home with his Vortex Manipulator set back to pretty-much-useless again and he hadn’t argued. Maybe because he knew he hadn’t actually accomplished anything by using it to teleport to the Doctor anyway. Him being there hadn’t actually done anything. (Unlike last time, with the Master, when Jack had got the three of them back to the Earth from the end of the universe, and up to the Valiant, and Martha back down to walk the Earth to spread the news of the Doctor… So maybe it hadn’t even been him the Doctor needed that time – just his wristcomp.)
Whatever the situation, he hadn’t argued because he didn’t need the Doctor like he used to. He’d spent 140 years waiting for an explanation, an acknowledgement; he’d got them and at last he’d been able to move on. He didn’t pine for the Doctor anymore. The Doctor he’d loved was gone. Maybe the Jack the Doctor had loved was gone. He knew the Doctor still wasn’t really comfortable around his Wrongness, and he couldn’t blame him.
They’d look each other up in times of crisis, and that was it. For the rest of the time, well, Jack had got his own team now. Which had some vacancies.
He looked across at Mickey and Martha with a grin. “So, you two. Do I even need to ask if you’d like a job?”

*gulps* what an intro...

I have to admit, this fic makes me kind of sad. Because I'm really not seeing Jack/Doctor anymore. :-(
no subject
Yes sad too - *snuggles you*
no subject
The Doctor/Jack thing is sad but, you know, interesting? I'm intrigued as to where fandom will make it go. And where canon will make it go.
no subject
I really shouldn't be talking to people - I'm in a foul mood.

If - I say *if* - I were the sort of person to participate in fandom wank I think today would be the day I could hurl vitriol that would stick...
no subject
Maybe you should go and hurl some vitriol. Might make you feel better!

Well, okay, Martha would like to respectfully disagree...

I was thinking earlier that all the companions walking away at the end of JE, no muss, no fuss, is sort of a pre-emptive strike on their part at the Doctor's habit of dumping them. They've got used to it, and this time they're leaving first.

But Jack's resilient, more than anything else, and yeah, he has his own team now. Which, as we all noticed, does have a couple of vacancies. :D
Thank you so much! *is all sniffly from birthday-fic awesomeness*

And yeah. It's weird, because I don't even know where this fic came from - it just sort of appeared in my mind, and I realised that yeah, Jack's okay with it all now. Like, really okay. As you say, he'll be there in a flash if needed, and I can see him and the Doctor maybe building a closer relationship again in the future (probably the distant future), but for now, this really is it. Torchwood is it, it's what he wants.
Which I know is what I was supposed to get from the end of LotTL, but it's taken me till now instead. *g*
no subject
Heh. You're not alone there by any means. In fact I have mentioned to others that Jack is, at this point, a heck of a lot more accepting and OK with things than I am. *g*
Yep, the whole weekend was lots of fun! New Orleans and Gulfport, beignets and beaches, mmmm.

I think I'm okay with it now. I can still write and read Doctor/Jack fic from any time up to now, after all. Or far in the future.
no subject
Me too. I just had an emotional epiphany less than a week ago that somehow made it work for me. And it certainly wasn't thanks to LotTL!
(I've started in the wrong place here, but lovely fic. Jack's realization about the wrist comp was the saddest thing to me, I think.)
no subject
Glad it wasn't just me that took a while to come to terms with it, and glad you liked the fic!
The wrist comp thing is definitely sad. Though tbh, I'd been thinking for a long time that he hadn't actually done anything at all, really, that time too, so at least there was the wrist comp!

The Episode That Never Was vs. JE
I actually thought Jack got more to do in the S4 finale, than he did in the S3 one. TSE/JE he killed a Dalek in each episode.
U/TSoD/ahem... there was nothing, his Vortex Manipulator got them back to Earth and onto the Valiant and Martha back to Earth to walk for a year... but since Jack also had the hand, the Master could turn the Doctor into Tweety Bird Doctor.
On the whole I'll take the ending for S4.
I like the fic though, and I'd love to see you write one where Jack and the Doctor meet up again and become close (well, closer than they are now).
Hey, did you see I committed fic? If you want to read a short story with Jack and Sarah Jane, go over to my lj. It's rated G so you might not be interested.
Re: The Episode That Never Was vs. JE
Though I figured Rose would have shot the Dalek that shot the Doctor after a moment anyway. Which other one did he kill? I don't remember.
Glad you liked the fic. And I'm sure I'll write another future Jack/Doctor one at some point. :-)
I haven't noticed your fic anywhere, no - sorry - but will add it to my reading list for when I actually feel like reading fic. I'm having a bit of a lack of attention span at the moment. :-(
(And I do actually read G-rated stuff, you know. Hey, I actually write it occasionally, too - see above! *g*)

Heh. That's me about S3.

I didn't. If Jack hadn't shown up, I thought the Doctor and Rose would have died, since she hadn't even carried it, ready to shoot it, she was just holding on to it.
The other Dalek was on the ship, when Daleks started to show up. I believe Jack ran into the TARDIS, grabbed a huge gun for himself and tossed one to Mickey and then Jack destroyed his second Dalek.

Heh, I didn't want you to feel pressured to read it if it didn't sound appealing to you.
I can understand going off fic after the finale, I did that last year and didn't read much after the finale until I started to a couple of months ago.
It's at the top of my lj right now, and if I update my lj at the same rate as last time, it's likely to remain the top for almost a year. *grin*

I don't think I'm really saying Jack's got over the Doctor. I still think they could and will get together again further down the line. I just have a real problem seeing Ten/Jack, right here, right now. But just because Jack's realised he doesn't need the Doctor anymore, that doesn't mean he doesn't love him. They just need to work out how it works between them again.

But that's just an interpretation, not a debate or wank.
