Hmmm. I think the calmness comes from him actually being relatively in control at that point. In control of his plans, and in control of the Doctor, really. The Doctor is being openly needy and the Master knows that gives him the power.

...And I can justify anything, it seems. I just write by instinct. Calm!Master is just what happened. *g*
