OMG, I'm an auntie!!!! My sister-in-law went into labour 12 days early last night and this morning I have a nephew!!!! Sooooo excited!

(Now I need to finish the blanket and cardigan I've been knitting but got behind on due to a hurt shoulder, and also the meals I've been planning to cook for them!)

I was very nervous about this one because Jack is such a stickler for detail and I was anticipating a lot of criticism. But he was thrilled with it and complimented me particularly on the idea of using cut-in-half maltesers for Dalek bumps instead of chocolate buttons as most people seem to do.

He also says it's the best-tasting cake ever. He's a little sweetie! :-)

Picture under the cut as it's a bit big! )

So, today we have two new additions to the household! Meet Marmalade (front) and Tango (rear), gorgeous 17 week-old rescue kittens we brought home today. They're very shy as they haven't had much human contact yet (they and their mum were found under a car by an old lady who brought them in, but she had Alzheimer's and kept forgetting to feed them, so were rescued from there by the gas man and taken to a shelter) but they are beautiful and sweet-tempered and we are all completely in love with them already! :-)

Label I got on a new top/dress/tunic/thing from an online order:

"After unpacking this garment, you may find a light pressing will remove any creases which may have occurred in transit."

Well - er - yeah! *boggles some more*

Okay, it's getting on towards Christmas and I spent a happy hour or so yesterday going through recipes for mincemeat, Christmas cake and Christmas pudding and adding the ingredients to my shopping list for my online Tesco order today.

Only to find that Tesco apparently do not have *any* currants. Not sold out or waiting for stock. They just don't have them.

And this at six weeks to Christmas!

Well, I guess I'll be getting my 750g of currants elsewhere then!

ETA: No candied peel either! This is ridiculous!

So... new default icon. I've been going off 'Lick here' for a while now - no real reason, just that it doesn't really look like Jack to me any more (the picture is several years old) and that I feel for me it's very strongly emotionally tied to my early days on LJ, a time when I was very depressed and trying to escape RL by saturating myself with fandom.

I'm better than that now. Not completely recovered by any means but definitely on the way up - and most importantly, definitely more interested in RL than fandom, which can be seen by the fact that most of my posts are now RL-related, whereas when I started on LJ in 2007 they were nearly all fandom-related.

So, time for a new default icon. And I loved this one when I first saw it because it encapsulates everything DW is about for me (I started watching it at about Amelia's age, after all) and also because over the last year or so I have started to finally believe in myself again too. So it's still fandom-related but less fandom-specific and more applicable to RL - my life - too.

ETA: And huge thanks and hugs to my anonymous gifter!

Ever since we got our scarlet satiny (but cotton) bedding for our new bed back in Jan/Feb/whenever it was, I've been looking for blankets/throws to go with it for when we need extra warmth.

We had decided on black chenille throws, and had more or less decided I needed to settle for the Dunelm Mill £15 each ones (single bed size, because we have two separate single duvets) even though they probably wouldn't be that great quality.

And then I went into Asda for groceries and clothes today, and I just happened to glance down an aisle and saw chenille cushions, and found throws just below them. Gorgeously soft and snuggly, 35% cotton, and only £8 each! In fact, now I look at the receipt, I see that they were actually on a '2 for £12' offer, so in fact they were only £6 each!!!!

How fabulous is that? :-)

I just have to share how incredibly yummy peach and plum crumble is when made from Marks and Spencers' 'perfectly ripe' fruit (on offer at the moment 'cos it's in season) and a basic crumble topping combined with crumbs from homemade cereal bars that got a little overcooked and had to be scraped out of the baking tray in bits. I've been enjoying the bits of those cereal bars anyway, but there were some bits that were just too small, so I've been saving those to make a crumble, and golly, this was gorgeous!

Which is fantastic, because there are now three more two-person crumbles in the freezer! :-)

Also? Butternut squash soup from the freezer served with bacon butties? To die for.

I really, really enjoyed my dinner tonight, and even more so because I wasn't really looking forward to it that much! :-)

P.S. Talking about butternut squashes, we finally have two fruits growing in the garden! One is kind of round, so like half a squash, and the other is bent into an L-shape, but I've raised them on a couple of old cooling racks (I have loads) so they don't rot and they seem to be ripening nicely!!! :-)

Sincerest apologies to those of you who got spammed by a stoopid email apparently sent from me this afternoon - which presumably is any of you I've ever emailed. Ooops!

Andy has gone over my computer and can't find anything else odd, and has re-installed virus checkers etc. so hopefully this won't happen again. If it does, I guess I'll have to close down that account and get a new one, which would be a bit of a bother since I've got about 20 RP journals and various other things all attached to that address... *sigh*

Phew! I think I've finally just about caught up on sleep again! Not a brilliant night but at least I got to bed early (11pm), slept on the sofa so I didn't have to get up when Jack kept wanting to be changed (though I did wake up a bit), and I hadn't had a nap during the day so I did actually sleep. *sighs with relief*

We had a nice family afternoon out yesterday. It was supposed to be a day but we're terrible at getting out of the house so it was an afternoon. We went to our nearest (an hour away) stately home, Audley End - a very nice drive in the sunshine through pretty countryside and a very nice afternoon in the grounds. We didn't actually get into the house, or the 1880s 'servants preparing for their picnic' thing, because we didn't get into the tea room for lunch until after 2pm and then our order got lost so it was after 3 when we got out and then Jack needed a run so we went for a walk round the grounds and then watched the Punch and Judy show at the 'pretend seaside' bit (which also had lots of sand and buckets and spades and deckchairs and ice-creams and outdoor quoits, dominoes, chess etc.) and then realised it was after 4pm and last admissions to the house were at 4. Ah well. We had a good time and Jack loved playing in the sand and it was a very nice afternoon out.

Today is for staying at home and getting on with things, especially in the garden. Oh, and a quick trip to Tescos for groceries.

So I just spent the last several hours without internet - typically on the evening that Andy is actually out of the house and the person I'm roleplaying Jack/Rani with (who's on EST and can only get online briefly at the same time as me each day) was actually around early. I therefore missed out on two hours' worth of Jack/Rani at a crucially interesting stage in their thread (i.e. they're about to have sex *g*) and am very, very annoyed!!!

On the good side, I have done a fair bit of writing today. Not, unfortunately, Master Plan (except a few words and a bit of fiddling with it) but it's related in that it's four drabbles set during the Master's defeat in LotTL. I'll probably post it tomorrow, because I need to re-read and possibly edit before I post and I'm too tired tonight.

Will be going to bed soon. Saturday morning dancing has moved this term from 10.45 to 9.00!!! So I'm going to have to get up at normal work time! :-(

Hope you have a wonderful day!

-------------------------

Weird. Just spoke to the postman and he said it's -2 degrees in the town and there's snow everywhere. Yet here, in the village a couple of miles away, it's only just on zero and there's not even a frost. Huh.

Will wrap up warm to go into work!

Grrr. I just realised, I'm going to be stuck downstairs in the kitchen making dinner at 5.35. I'm going to have to wait till after dinner to watch DW confidential! :-(

In other news, I just realised I hadn't posted here about the ficlet and drabble I posted recently, for those of you who haven't got round to friending my fic journal yet.

Sharing Sorrows - a follow-up to Drowning Sorrows (aka Two Men in a Pub) - and Not Drinkin'? - a Jack/John drabble.

I am absolutely shattered again today, because I couldn't get to sleep last night. Grrr. And Jack's off at nursery, so normally I'd be off back to bed around this point, but we've got the cleaners coming around midday, so I need to tidy up a bit first and it's not worth going back to bed just for that time. Plus I'm planning to go off to Tesco's while they're here (because I can't relax with other people in the house) so I need to write my shopping list - mainly things for Jack's birthday party on Sunday, postponed from last Sunday because we were all too ill.

Also, my sinuses are killing me. *sighs*

Ah well. Have a fic list for the latter part of the year. Yep, that's right, I haven't done one since July!

Statistics here )

My Master Fic List can be found here.

I was going to do a Happy Christmas post last night but then I lost the internet so I just went to bed instead. So here it is this morning. Hope everyone has a fantastic day, whatever you're celebrating!

(And hope you're healthier than my family, who are all coughing and sneezing, and that you slept better too, which isn't hard. There is a very strong probability of napping this afternoon!)

Anyway. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper, who made my morning with her Chrsitmas present - this icon. A happy Jack icon! I only realised the other day that I didn't have any! Yay!!!!! :-)

Phew! I've just reorganised (and cleaned) the fridge, put away the Tesco delivery, put out the recycling, and actually enjoyed it! Because it was like a blooming Christmas hamper! Cranberries and satsumas and gammon and sausages and cream and chocolate and biscuits and Twiglets and Pringles and so many vegetables that I couldn't fit them all in the fridge but got them all in the cool bag, where they should be all right.

And it was fun!

Very behind on everything else I was supposed to do today, but what the hell. I've got the shopping put away. That's a major achievement!

(Btw, I keep thinking DT looks like a mischievous Christmas elf in this icon! *g*)

Well, it's taken me all evening, but I have made my list of everything I need to do, including the timetable for Christmas Day cooking.

(Well, everything I can think of as yet - there's bound to be a lot more added!)

It's amazing how good it feels to have everything planned out. When I actually do things is of course absolutely flexible, as long as I have them done by a certain point - and as long as I get to cross them off my list!

*sighs* I think I can relax now. Hopefully enough to actually sleep tonight!

P.S. Cat update: Minstrel's eye is a lot better, but still a bit swollen and the vet was able to see this time that there's a lesion in the roof of his mouth, presumably from another cat's claw. There's a big ginger cat who's been prowling around so it's probably him. And it might well be this that's irritated his eye, from the bottom/rear.

Anyway, I've got to take him back again on Friday - thank goodness they do evenings, so I've got a 6.50 appointment, which should mean I have time to cook and eat dinner first, if I leave work just a little bit early!

I have just spent a very enjoyable evening planning out my Christmas dinner and baking - what to cook, and listing the ingredients in a table so I can sort it and know how much of everything I need to buy.

I therefore know that I'm going to need at least 675g (1.5 lb) of butter, 600g (1.3 lb) caster sugar, 9 eggs, 700g (1.5 lb) of plain flour and 600 ml (1 pint) of double cream! Pretty scary amounts!

I haven't sorted out the nibbles for Christmas Day yet, but I think I've done everything else. Which is a huge relief! :-)

And I have birthday!fic from [livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper, a lovely little bit of Jack/Nine. Thank you! :-)
